My journey into speaking
Public speaking wasn’t something I intentionally set out to pursue—it developed organically alongside my clinical career.
My first opportunity came in 2001 at the Combined Sections Meeting in San Antonio, TX, where I presented my master’s thesis on the *One Arm Hop Test*. At the time, I had no idea that single presentation would ignite two lifelong passions: public speaking and professional education.
In the years that followed, I began presenting clinical case studies for HydroWorx and speaking at both regional and national events on pillar strength – a concept that was, at the time, relatively new. I was fortunate to be part of Athletes’ Performance (now EXOS), where we were doing groundbreaking work in performance training and rehabilitation. Under the guidance of our founder, Mark Verstegen, I was encouraged to share what we were learning with the broader rehab and sports medicine communities. That support became a major turning point in my career, giving me a platform to grow as both a speaker and educator.
By 2005, I was speaking regularly at state, regional, and national conferences, connecting with professionals in athletic training, physical therapy, and strength and conditioning. These events became more than speaking engagements—they became opportunities to build lasting relationships, share ideas, and contribute to the evolution of our field.
In 2006, I delivered my first talk on a concept that would become a cornerstone of my career: Bridging the Gap from Rehab to Performance. What started as a lecture turned into a full workshop series, and eventually, a book that has since been translated into multiple languages and adopted internationally.
Over the next five years, my speaking evolved. I began leading workshops, designing mentorship programs, and developing continuing education content through Athletes’ Performance, and later through my own education company, Structure & Function Education.
Speaking has since become an integral part of my work—allowing me to inspire, educate, and collaborate with clinicians around the world who are just as passionate about elevating human performance and healthcare delivery as I am.
